I've been giving a lot of thought about this and I've come to a decision that this is going to be my Big Kahuna brief. The main product is going the children's book itself, but I'll also be expanding the product range. I want to produce something that could help/engage with hospitalised children - why? It's not something that is an obvious path for an illustrator I think, so there's the opportunity to do a lot of things, plus I already have connections with Leeds Children's Hospital, so could be a great product idea to propose to them!
I've already had some ideas for additional products which can be found in my previous post; but I also want to make something interactive, educational as well as fun and therapeutic (because I'm sure being strapped to a hospital bed is not every child's dream!)
Something I thought to produce was an activity book for kids to do whilst recovering. So I decided to look if anyone has done this, and not many people have actually - so thats good! I did come across a few and Leanne Bock's hospital activity book is one of them! she made this to engage the patients and visitors of the paediatric ward at Epworth Hospital in Melbourne - I thought it was cute! and really simple too.
I also came across Art with Heart who are on a mission to help children overcome trauma through creative expression - which I thought was such a good idea, I want to be doing this! They're a nonprofit organization behind Oodles of Doodles, Chill & Spill and other evidence-based, therapeutic books and programs that help children that are struggling through illness, divorce, violence, or the loss of someone important to them.
I am intrigued with their books, especially Oodles of Doodles and Marvellous Magnificent Me, because the colours just speak to me! but they don't have previews of the book which I'm really gutted about!
