The task was to do 5 compositional sketches within an A7 frame - portrait or landscape working in pencil and develop one, enlarged to A5 size. Sketches must have the same 3 elements:
- Figure (in a certain pose)
- Object (something natural/man made, big or small)
- Landscape (street furniture, other people, interior space)
For this task I went with the same zookeeper theme - I decided to look back at all the other drawings that I've done within this theme and decided to do something with aquatic life as I have not covered this area yet. My thumbnail sketches of a zookeeper swimming in an aquarium with the fish:
I think all of these composition could all work depending on what the context is however, here I wanted to achieve the feeling like the audience is looking through the seaweed but still showing some of the character's surroundings. I think sketch 5 does this best so I decided to take this sketch further to refine it into a more developed image:
I've really enjoyed this task and I might even go further and digitise and add colour to this - This exercise has made me realise that my first idea/drawing isn't always the best compositionally and how important the sketching, testing and experimenting stages actually are to help with the development of a good image. This is something that I will definitely keep doing to ensure that I have explored every possibility to enable me to see which one would work best as a finished piece.
